Late Lansing Everett High athletic director posthumously receives first ‘Building Leaders’ award
Cindy Short, the late athletic director at Lansing Everett High School, recently received the first “Building Leaders” award, given to her posthumously by WVFN-AM’s “The Drive with Jack Ebling.”
The “Building Leaders” award, recognizing Mid-Michigan school employees who have gone above and beyond to help students and athletes, is co-sponsored by MEA and Home Management Company. The award showcases outstanding educators and coaches whose leadership has inspired students on and off the field. Sam Tucker, owner of Home Management Company, wanted to recognize the excellence, extra effort and selfless dedication educators’ put into teaching and coaching.
Everett boys’ basketball coach Desmond Ferguson accepted the award on Short’s behalf, and will prominently display it at the school.
“She always put the kids first,” said Ferguson, an Everett graduate and former professional basketball player who was hired by Short last year. “You could always go in the office and talk to her. She was tough on the kids, but she showed tough love.”
Short, 49, died Feb. 17 after a snowmobile accident in Ogemaw County.
Serving as Everett’s athletic director since the mid-1990s, Short is remembered as a hard-working leader who cared deeply for her students and co-workers.
“Cindy Short did an awful lot of fighting for her coaches and fighting for her athletes,” said WVRN host Jack Ebling, a longtime Lansing-area sportscaster. “I don’t know how many hours she worked, but I don’t want to count them.”
Ferguson said Short “really loved what she did, and it showed every day. She was there early in the morning, and was the last one to leave every night.”
“It was an honor to know her as a person.”
