Public vs. private
House bill would privatize most public services
Legislation to privatize most government functions, including K-12 schools, colleges, and universities, has been introduced in Lansing.
House Bill 4453, sponsored by Rep. Tom McMillin, R-Rochester Hills, would prohibit any public entity, including school districts, community colleges, and universities, from providing services that "are or can be offered by private enterprise," with a few exceptions such as public safety. The bill states that schools could not provide "goods and services to students and invited guests" if they can be obtained from privateers.
The bill, previously on the May 18 agenda of the House Regulatory Reform Committee, is no longer on the agenda. MEA is monitoring this bill and will provide an update if the bill is taken up.
