Southeast Michigan educators collaborate on parent summit

The Novi Education Association and other local MEA affiliates are orgazining an education summit to be held Monday, May 13 from 6:15-9 p.m. in the auditorium of Novi Middle School at 49000 W. 11 Mile Road in Novi.

The debate surrounding reforms to the education system has prompted several MEA locals in Southeast Michigan to put together a parent education summit in Novi on Monday, May 13.

The summit, which runs from 6:15-9 p.m. in the auditorium of Novi Middle School, 49000 W. 11 Mile Road in Novi, includes four sessions, and will be moderated by WXYZ-TV reporter JoAnne Purtan. Teachers, school board members, a representative for Gov. Rick Snyder, state Board of Education members, state legislators and school administrators will be on the panel.

The event is hosted by the Novi Education Association and Novi Community Schools, in partnership with Farmington Public Schools, the Farmington EA, the Livonia EA, the Plymouth-Canton EA, the South Lyon EA, the Walled Lake WA and the Waterford EA.

“We hope parents get a better idea of what has been happening in the public schools — the last few years in terms of continued legislation that dictates how we function as an organization,” said Seth Furlow, public relations chair for the Novi EA. “We also hope they get some answers as to why this is happening from the lawmakers involved and why they believe these changes have been implemented.  We also hope to provide a perspective from the people within the school systems, which too often have been missing from these decisions.”

“This affects every member of our community, even those without children,” Furlow said. “We hope to have a full house at the Novi Middle School auditorium.”

The first session will focus on student performance and what makes schools effective. The second session deals with teacher recruitment, professional development and evaluations. The third session will talk about public financing for education, while the fourth and final session will be a question-and-answer session with the audience.
