Contact your state Senators now to oppose SB 618

Senate Bill 618, which eliminates the cap on charter schools and allows for the outsourcing of teachers, was reported out of the Senate Education Committee and is now headed to the floor of the full Senate for a vote -- perhaps as early as next week.

MEA members need to call, email and write your state Senator urging them to oppose SB 618.  This bill does nothing to help all our students succeed -- it's just another attack on our neighborhood public schools.

  1. Outsourcing teachers won't help students -- it will only harm neighborhood schools by handing control of our classrooms over to for-profit, private companies.
  2. Instead of paying teachers what they are to recruit and retain the best, private companies will pad their bottom line at the expense of kids and communities.
  3. Research shows that charter schools, as a whole, don't perform better than our traditional neighborhood schools. Allowing for unlimited charter schools won't benefit the kids in either charter or traditional schools -- it will only benefit the management companies that run them.
  4. Quality charter schools can be expanded, but it's essential that we increase accountability for charter schools to ensure they're accomplishing their mission of innovating and helping all students succeed. Keeping a cap on charters is one key accountability measure -- and we need more to be put in place.
