Testimony from Ken Fletcher, associate executive director of the Michigan Nurses Association, doubts HB 5345 will save the state money or benefit pubic employees.

On Thursday, the Committee on Public Employee Health Care Reform heard some familiar concerns about the state-mandated health care plan for all public employees. But it seems the committee’s patience is wearing thin with the continued criticism of the scheme.

Testimony from representatives of various state associations who employ public employees all believe that HB 5345 will not save the state any money; will not preserve collective bargaining rights and WILL slash benefits and increase costs.

These same representatives urged caution in proceeding with the plan and called for detailed studies and data before the committee takes action.

“This is a complex issue that we can’t jump into. There are too many questions. My association can’t support this plan,” said Bob Kopasz, chair of the State Employee Retirees Association.

It was at this point that Rep. Pam Byrnes, chair of the committee, expressed her exasperation with testimony that continually condemns the plan but offers no alternatives.

“I’m tired of hearing the same complaints of the plan. If there are problems, then offer solutions. What do you want us to do with it?” Byrnes challenged.

Her outburst fuels rumors that the bill will be discharged soon from committee.
