MDE issues changes to teacher certification

On May 18, the state Department of Education (MDE) finalized the implementation of new laws relating to teacher certification. The new laws impact teachers moving from a Provisional teaching certificate to a Professional Education teaching certificate and to those teachers renewing their Professional Education certificate. Both changes are effective Sept. 1, 2013.

MEA’s Professional Development/Human Rights Department has sent out two certification alerts to members regarding the changes.

With the changes, teachers no longer have to complete an 18 semester-hour planned program from an approved university. Teachers will also have two more options for advancing in certification.

Now, teachers will be able to renew their Professional Education teaching certificate by submitting evidence of their participation in district-provided professional development.
