MEA member Maury Koffman elected to NEA Executive Committee

MEA member Maury Koffman, president of the 2,200-member Michigan State University Administrative Professional Association, was elected to NEA’s Executive Committee on Friday.

MEA member Maury Koffman was elected to NEA’s Executive Committee on Friday, giving Michigan educators a prominent voice on NEA’s top governing body.

Koffman is serving his fourth term as president of the 2,200-member Michigan State University Administrative Professional Association, MEA’s largest local affiliate. Elected at last week’s NEA Representative Assembly in Atlanta, Koffman will begin his three-year term on the NEA Executive Committee in September.

“It's an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to continue advocating and working for our members and our students in public education,” Koffman said. “It's my pleasure to continue fighting for public education in this country, and working with the leaders of this union to ensure that we're doing everything possible to provide that quality public education.”

Koffman is in his second term as a member of the NEA Board of Directors. For the past three years, he’s served as a member of the NEA Board Steering Committee and an elected delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly. He earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from MSU, and is a graduate of the NEA Emerging Leader Academy.

“Maury Koffman is an accomplished educator and the Association is benefiting from his energy and expertise,” NEA President Dennis Van Roekel said. “He keenly understands the challenges facing students and public education employees, and he is deeply committed to equity and opportunity in education.”

The NEA Executive Committee includes the NEA president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer, plus six members elected at-large by the Representative Assembly. The committee is responsible for setting general policy and maintaining the interests of NEA and acts for the NEA Board of Directors in between its four regularly scheduled meetings each year.
