Why belong?
It’s a question that prospective members
routinely ask. It’s a question that current
members frequently raise, too.
As president of the Michigan Education
Association, a professional labor union of
more than 160,000 education employees,
I welcome such questions.
The reason to join—or to continue to support—MEA is the
advantages that you gain at the bargaining table, in your
classroom or work site, in the legislative arena and in your
community.
Founded in 1852, the MEA is committed to advocating for
you and your career. MEA’s mission is to ensure that the
education of our students and the working environments of
our members are of the highest quality. As an MEA member,
you are also a member of the 3.2 million-member National
Education Association (NEA).
This booklet is designed to help explain the MEA Advantage.
I hope it answers some of your questions. If not, please
feel free to contact your local president, your MEA UniServ
director, or me. We want you to be fully informed about all
aspects of your membership.
Sincerely,
Sincerely, Iris K. Salters
MEA President
