Cat-a-Van reading tour coming to Michigan for Read Across America

The Cat in the Hat is back in Michigan! This year, three schools will be stops on the Cat-a-Van reading tour on March 3 and 4. Again, the Read Across America celebration is a partnership between NEA and Delta Dental of Michigan.

The Cat-a-Van Tour will be delivering a special message to those students: "2 x 2 + 20 = good oral health and literacy habits."

The Read Across America campaign is asking children and their parents to brush for two minutes, two times a day, and read for 20 minutes each day for a total of 24 times. Reports show that American students miss 51 million hours of school every year because of oral health problems.

The students in Livonia, Southfield and Grand Rapids will be getting special stovepipe "reading" hats, books, and toothbrushes to keep them reading and brushing at home. Delta Dental of Michigan will be presenting grants to the libraries and media centers of the schools to help them keep their libraries stocked with books.

Read Across America was originally created as one-day event to celebrate the joy of reading on Dr. Seuss' birthday. Since the event began 17 years ago, more than 45 million people participate each year.
