A “proud product of public education,” former Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer received the 2013 MEA Distinguished Service Award at Friday’s MEA Representative Assembly in Lansing.

Brewer, a Macomb County resident who served as MDP chair for 18 years until February of this year, has a strong track record as an advocate for public school employees and an ally of MEA members.

“I can’t tell you how honored I am to receive this award,” Brewer said during his acceptance speech, adding that public school teachers and support staff “contributed so much to who I am today.”

During his speech, Brewer discussed the recent revelation of Gov. Rick Snyder’s secret “skunk works” group, which has been meeting covertly for months to hatch a school voucher scheme for the benefit of corporate special interests.

“Fighting these kinds of efforts and defending public education is one of the great causes of our times,” Brewer said.

Although his time as MDP chair is over, Brewer said he’s not going anywhere – he will continue to fight for the rights of teachers, education support staff, higher education faculty and students.

“I look forward to continuing to stand with you to defend public education against these attacks and ensuring it remains as one of the most important institutions that American democracy has produced,” he said.
