Gov. Rick Snyder presented his $47 billion budget proposal for 2012 that includes historic cuts for public education.
The plan calls for a 4.1 percent cut to K-12 funding—or $470 less per pupil – and a 15 percent reduction for higher education. It also would tax private and public pensions. Meanwhile, Snyder wants to give hefty tax breaks for business and other special interests.

Dear Editor:
It’s a shame that Gov. Snyder’s idea of a “shared sacrifice” is slashing education funding while continuing tax breaks for big business. When will politicians in Lansing stop trying to balance the budget on the backs of our children? These drastic cuts to public education will mean larger class sizes and less individual attention for students. That doesn’t sound like a “shared sacrifice” to me.
