DETROIT – The following statement can be attributed to MEA President Paula Herbart regarding tonight’s victory by Gretchen Whitmer in the race for Michigan governor:

“Today a few million Michiganders joined tens of millions of Americans across the country in exercising their most fundamental right in a democracy—voting.  We witnessed a “course correction” for Michigan, for our nation and for public education.

Redistricting, minimum wage, earned paid sick time and voting reform measures earn recommendation of state’s largest school employee union

EAST LANSING – At their last meeting, MEA’s Board of Directors voted to support four of the ballot measures that should appear on the November ballot and recommend that our members and other supporters of public education vote YES on these proposals.

Labor Voices: No public tax dollars for private schools

In 2000, Betsy DeVos suffered a spectacular loss at the polls in her attempt to get private school vouchers funded by state taxpayers. Nearly 70 percent of Michigan voters rejected that year’s DeVos-funded ballot measure, which ended her push for public funding of private and religious schools.
