Thanks in large part to the volunteerism and votes of MEA members and their families across the state, I’m happy to say Gretchen Whitmer is our candidate for governor in November! Together, we will make public education a priority again in Michigan by valuing students, respecting educators and funding our schools.
And we need to be together – because Betsy DeVos and her allies are together behind Gretchen’s opponent, Bill Schuette. Having taken tens of thousands in campaign contributions from the DeVoses, defended Betsy’s performance as Secretary of Education, and spent years advocating against MEA members’ best interests (including his commercials against Prop 2 and collective bargaining in 2012 and his support of five years’ worth of appeals on our 3% case), Bill Schuette’s track record is clear.
For public education’s sake, we must win in November – and we will #WinWithWhitmer!
Gretchen isn’t the only friend of public education who won last night – from Congressional races to the State Legislature to local offices, we’re proud of all MEA’s recommended candidates, win or lose, for standing strong for public education. MEA members across the state will continue to screen and recommend candidates now that the primary is complete and we’ll work together – with candidates from either party – to elect lawmakers who will put students first by listening to the concerns of front-line educators.
On to victory on Nov. 6!
