EAST LANSING – The following can be attributed to MEA President Paula Herbart regarding the State House’s passage of HB 5526:
“Early this morning, the House of Representatives passed another so-called ‘education reform’ bill that does nothing to support struggling schools or increase student achievement. HB 5526, mandating A-F letter grades for Michigan schools, would abandon the ‘school transparency dashboard’ developed by the Michigan Department of Education. The dashboard is a much more comprehensive approach, providing parents with a wealth of information on school quality.
“HB 5526 will place even more emphasis on standardized testing, taking us backward in efforts to reduce reliance on such tests and their dominance over the education of our children.
“The State Senate should reject this legislation. Barring that, the governor should add this bill to the litany of poorly-conceived bills being rushed through the lame duck session that deserve his veto.”
