In case you missed it over the long holiday weekend, Detroit Free press columnist Nancy Kaffer pulled no punches on the state’s Republican leaders who’ve reigned over several years of educational destruction in Michigan.
Her column in Saturday’s issue, “How Michigan is Failing Our Teachers,” outlines the “blunders, outright malevolence and inattention” that constitute GOP education policies since Republicans took control of state government in 2011.
She also gives voice to Birmingham teacher Scott Craig, who asked the question that many educators frequently wonder of politicians: “Why do they hate us so much? Why do they really resent us?”
Says one policy expert quoted in the column: “We need teachers to do more but we’d like to pay them less and reduce benefits, and hold them accountable for everything. It’s really challenging.”
