Protecting the rights of school employees is the core of MEA’s mission. Through your MEA membership, you can take advantage of the expertise and assistance of UniServ directors, along with legal services and liability insurance.
Local UniServ directors provide MEA services directly to members and their local associations. These highly trained professional labor relations consultants work in offices around the state and can access services from MEA departments and staff to help with issues. UniServ directors provide assistance in contract bargaining, grievance processing, retirement concerns, arbitrations, training, job security protections, accessing member-only benefits, and more. Go to www.mea.org/uniserv to locate your local field office and UniServ director.
MEA employs several full-time attorneys and retains prestigious law firms to help protect members’ rights in matters resulting from their employment. Your UniServ director can directly access these legal services which help members and local affiliates in cases regarding wage and hour laws, unfair labor practices, layoff and recall, retirement, unemployment compensation, discrimination, civil rights, and contract enforcement.
Just as doctors have malpractice insurance to protect them in the course of doing their job, MEA provides all members with $1 million in professional liability insurance. This member benefit is available through the NEA Educators Employment Liability program (EEL) which MEA administers. It protects members from personal financial liability for most incidents arising out of their educational employment activities and duties. The insurance includes attorney’s fees so members won’t have to pay a dime out of their own pockets to defend themselves from frivolous lawsuits related to their employment.
MEA is here to protect MEA members’ rights. That’s the MEA advantage.
