MEA announces recommendations for state Supreme Court and education boards
EAST LANSING – The Michigan Education Association is recommending the reelection this November of Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein, the association of teachers, education support professionals and higher-education faculty announced Thursday.
“Richard Bernstein is a longtime advocate for children with special needs, people with disabilities and everyday working people, and we are proud to recommend him for another term on the Supreme Court,” said MEA President Paula Herbart, a veteran music teacher from Macomb County. “Justice Bernstein is fair, impartial and steadfast in his commitment to civil rights for all Michiganders, no matter their wealth or background.”
The MEA also announced its continuing recommendations of Pamela Pugh to the State Board of Education, Marilyn Kelly to the Wayne State University Board of Governors, and Katherine White and Michael Behm to the University of Michigan Board of Regents. All are incumbents seeking reelection Nov. 8.
The 120,000-member union announced in December its continuing recommendations for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel.
MEA’s continuing recommendations are granted to incumbents who were previously recommended by MEA following an interview with its Statewide Screening & Recommending Committee, comprised of MEA members from across the state. MEA’s recommendations for other statewide seats will be decided after the political parties select their general election candidates and they are invited to interview with the Statewide Screening & Recommending Committee later this year.
