URGENT: Apply NOW for Student Loan Repayment Program

Michigan educators who qualify for the state’s Student Loan Repayment Program must apply individually to participate this year, which is a change from how the program functioned in 2024 — its first year of operation.

Educators have until 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19 to apply using the form on the Student Loan Repayment Program website. Last year districts were responsible for submitting applications for qualified employees.

The program provides up to $200 to $400 per month to eligible school employees currently paying on qualifying federal student loans.

To be eligible, applicants must be participating in a federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program and making payments on an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan. Those who are active in PSLF but whose IDR is affected by the federal court injunction related to the SAVE program may still apply.

Updated eligibility requirements are available on the program website along with a Frequently Asked Questions page.

The Student Loan Repayment Program was developed under the leadership of state Sen. Darrin Camilleri as part of a broader effort to improve teacher attraction and retention in Michigan and address educator shortages across the state.
