MEA recommends McDonald for Attorney General

The Michigan Education Association is pleased to announce the recommendation of Karen McDonald for Attorney General.

Following interviews with our Statewide Screening & Recommendation Committee, which candidates from both parties were invited to attend, the committee voted to recommend McDonald to MEA members as the strongest candidate in this important race. The committee is made up of MEA members from across the state, including preK-12 teachers and education support professionals, higher education faculty and staff, and school retirees.

Currently serving as Oakland County Prosecutor, McDonald is a former educator and MEA member who has proven throughout her career a deep commitment to Michigan’s students, families, educators and the institution of public education.

“Karen has shown time and again that she is a steadfast friend of public education,” said Chandra Madafferi, MEA President & CEO. “From her time in the classroom, to her work as a judge, to her current service as county prosecutor, her words and her deeds reflect her dedication to the success of our students. She will make the safety of our students, their families and the educators who serve them her top priority.”

Throughout her career, McDonald has been a fearless advocate for working people, grounded in the belief that every worker deserves a voice, respect, and fairness on the job. She has consistently defended strong collective bargaining rights so educators and school employees can advocate for themselves, their students, and their communities.

“As Attorney General, Karen McDonald will continue to stand with educators by enforcing labor laws, pushing back against attacks on worker protections, and ensuring Michigan remains a state where hard work is honored and workers are treated with dignity and respect,” Madafferi said.

As the state’s largest school employee union, MEA and its members – who live and work in every Michigan county – have a long history of political engagement and helping friends of public education win elections.  As we enter 2026, MEA will continue to invite candidates from both parties to interview and will recommend candidates at the federal, state and local levels so our members can actively support pro-public education candidates in next year’s critical elections.
