Herbart: ‘We must be united’

The stress of this unprecedented moment is like nothing we’ve ever experienced.

MEA President Paula Herbart has been hearing that truth and other consistent messages from members all over the state, and MEA continues to use every tool and resource to lift up those voices so educators’ concerns are heard and addressed, she says in a video released Thursday.

It’s not just teachers, she notes: “School support staff and educators of all types and at all levels – from early childhood through college – are working harder than ever to make the best out of a bad situation.”

The rising number of COVID-19 cases is causing some districts to extend virtual schooling later into the school year, while some school boards seem insistent about pushing ahead with in-person learning in spite of health professionals warning that we are now experiencing a second wave.

“We must be united in addressing the impacts COVID-19 is having on education,” Herbart says.
