Tell Lawmakers to Act NOW on Evaluation, Third Grade Reading Bills

As federally mandated testing is underway and the school year enters its final two months, the time is NOW for lawmakers to take action on bills removing student growth data from teacher evaluations and delaying the implementation of third grade reading retention. While using standardized test data to retain students and judge teacher effectiveness is always a bad policy decision, it’s especially harmful during the ongoing pandemic.

Please take a moment to contact your State Senator and State Representative to urge them to take action right away on these issues. In particular, Senate Bills 56-57 and 265 could be taken up immediately in that chamber to move these two issues along, if a procedural “tie bar” to other legislation is broken. Evaluation and third grade reading are pressing, time-sensitive issues that the Legislature needs to act on immediately for this school year.

  2. Please reconsider the mandate of testing, using student growth data for evaluation and suspend the third grade reading retention law. The effects of the pandemic are more far reaching than you can imagine and these items will create irreparable damage to students , staff and families.
