Grand Rapids math teacher wins statewide MEA gender equity award

Wendy Winston, a middle school math teacher in Grand Rapids Public Schools, has been named the winner of MEA’s 2026 Maurine Wyatt Feminist and Gender Equity Award.

Winston’s lengthy and impressive resume includes advocating for students — including girls seeking futures in STEM — as chair of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s MI-STEM Advisory Council.

She was also named a regional semi-finalist for the 2020 Michigan Teacher of the Year award.

“Wendy is a dedicated urban educator who always puts students first,” said Jeff Pietrowski, a middle school teacher who nominated Winston for the award. “Her work reflects a deep, unwavering commitment to feminism, human rights, civil rights and public education.”

In addition, Winston has served in numerous elected leadership roles within her local, state and national education associations, including as an MEA regional vice president and on the MEA and NEA board of directors.

Calling her “hardworking and deeply committed to service,” Pietrowski said Winston’s work — from the school building level to the U.S. Capitol — ensures the voices of educators, students and communities are heard at every level.

“Wendy brings clarity and purpose to policy conversations, helping decision makers better understand the real impacts on families and schools,” Pietrowski said. “She’s a tireless advocate for equity and excellence, and she has a remarkable ability to inspire others to become more politically engaged and to step into leadership roles.”
