Medal of Honor recipient Jim McCloughan’s advice for educators

Former high school teacher and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient James McCloughan has some words of wisdom for educators going through their own “Vietnam,” facing challenges that feel overwhelming.

FOR TEACHERS:

Concentrate on what matters > students, colleagues, parents and community.

Bring forward what you love > engaging content, student interests, connection.

Create joy on the hardest days > Sing a song, make a joke, smile and laugh.

Remember who you are > “You’re a superhero to many of your students.”

Speak with a collective voice > Raise up your concerns as a group; don’t be silent.

FOR ADMINISTRATORS:

Think like a coach leading a team > empower the players on the field.

Ask what staff needs > provide training and equipment > listen to feedback.

Give encouragement and support > your people will win the game.
