Democratic legislators have reintroduced legislation to rein in skyrocketing health care costs for school employees, which can help keep great educators working in our local schools. SB 1136 (sponsored by Sen. Kevin Hertel, D-St. Clair Shores) and HB 6237 (Rep. Mai Xiong, D-Warren) are updated versions of a bill passed in 2024 (HB 6058) to address PA 152’s limits on what public employers can pay for insurance coverage. Whether it’s now or in 2027 with newly elected lawmakers, addressing this crisis for educators is a top priority.
