MEA announces additional federal and state candidate recommendations

The Michigan Education Association is proud to announce recommendations for the following federal races, in collaboration with the National Education Association:

  • U.S. Senate: Abdul El-Sayed
  • 7th Congressional District: William Lawrence
  • 10th Congressional District: Christina Hines

During recent screening interviews with MEA members, these candidates have shown they share MEA’s commitment to the promise of public education and the opportunity it provides to every student. They also believe that educators of all types who serve those students deserve improved compensation, greater professional respect, and a voice in both education policy and their workplaces.

MEA invites all candidates — Democratic, Republican & Independent — to participate in interviews with MEA members who make recommendation decisions based on education and labor issues. Congressional decisions are made by committees of members who live or work in the individual districts, while the Senate recommendation is chosen by MEA’s Statewide Screening & Recommendation Committee, which includes preK-12 teachers and education support professionals, higher education faculty and staff, and school retirees from across Michigan.

The Statewide S&R Committee also recently screened and subsequently recommended Amir Makled for the University of Michigan Board of Regents. With that decision, MEA’s slate of statewide and federal candidates includes:

Statewide:

  • Governor: Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
  • Secretary of State: Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist
  • Attorney General: Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit

  • Michigan State University Board of Trustees: Brianna Scott & Kelly Tebay Zemke
  • University of Michigan Board of Regents: Paul Brown & Amir Makled
  • Wayne State University Board of Governors: Shereef Akeel & Richard Mack

Federal:
