EAST LANSING – The Michigan Education Association is pleased to announce the following recommendations of candidates for the U.S. Senate and for eight Michigan Congressional districts:

– U.S. Senate – Gary Peters
– 5th District – Dan Kildee
– 6th District – Jon Hoadley
– 8th District – Elissa Slotkin
– 9th District – Andy Levin
– 11th District – Haley Stevens
– 12th District – Debbie Dingell
– 13th District – Rashida Tlaib
– 14th District – Brenda Lawrence

“Michigan educators proudly support these pro-public education candidates because they share the values that students and working families want and expect of those representing our state in Washington,” said MEA President Paula Herbart. “Now more than ever, we need friends of public education who will stand up to the destructive education policies of Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump.”

All nine of these candidates were screened and recommended by committees comprised of MEA members from the districts (or from across the state, in the case of Sen. Peters). This process will be conducted in other Congressional and State Legislative districts as we continue through 2020.

These federal recommendations were then concurred by the board of the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education at their recent meeting in Washington, D.C.

As the state’s largest school employee union, MEA and its members – who live and work in every Michigan county – have a long history of political engagement and helping friends of public education win elections.

The NEA Fund for Children and Public Education provides direct financial support to candidates for president, the U.S. House, and the U.S. Senate who will fight to support teachers, staff, and students and improve public education.
