Labor Day 2025: Stand together for a quality education budget

Every Labor Day, we’re reminded of the power of solidarity in the fight for progress. With the debate still ongoing around this year’s education budget, we are encouraging members to come together and convey a simple message: We Love Public Education – that’s why it’s past time to approve a quality education budget for our students.

MEA members are gathering at three key locations (click on the links for more information and to RSVP), plus lots more local events planned across the state:

DETROIT
LOCATION UPDATE 8/28:
Starting at 7:30 a.m., MEA and AFT Michigan members will be meeting near the intersection of 8th and Porter in Detroit, near IBEW Local 58 and Dean Savage Park. MEA will be distributing shirts and signs to members. There will be a short program at that location before the annual labor march steps off at 9 a.m., ending at Michigan Central Station’s Roosevelt Park.

MUSKEGON
West Michigan Unity Labor is hosting the Workers United Parade, with an 11 a.m. start at the corner of 4th and Western Ave. in Muskegon. MEA is walking with Muskegon Marching Band and giving away fanny packs and t-shirts.  Celebration follows the parade at Hackley Park.

NEGAUNEE
Join us in the U.P. at the 36TH Annual Labor Day Festival. There’s a parade lining up at 10 a.m. at Tobin & Clark Streets in Negaunee, with a picnic and speeches to follow at Jackson Mine Park. MEA has a tent with shirts, lunch tickets, and giveaways.

Join us at these events or find more local events you can participate in here. If you are planning to attend the Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day, please let us know by emailing publicaffairs@mea.org.
