Statement from MEA President Paula Herbart regarding Benton Harbor

EAST LANSING – The following can be attributed to MEA President Paula Herbart regarding the tentative plan to address the academic and financial challenges facing Benton Harbor Area Schools:

“From the outset, we have emphasized the need for everyone involved to engage together in vital conversations about what’s needed to provide Benton Harbor students the education they deserve.  We’re pleased that the school board and the Whitmer administration have reached an understanding regarding a plan that meets the needs of the community while providing a path to better academic outcomes and financial footing for the district.

“The front-line educators in Benton Harbor will be essential to the success of any plan.  As such, I hope both the school board and the state continue to engage Benton Harbor’s school employees in this process.  It’s essential that the district’s teachers and support staff are provided with the resources to help every Benton Harbor student achieve success in school and beyond.”
