Greene wins big in special Senate election with help from educators

Chedrick Greene won big in Tuesday’s special election in Senate District 35 in Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties, thanks to support from local educators who recommended his candidacy to fellow MEA members. When Greene takes office shortly, the Senate majority will return to a 20-18 advantage for the Democratic caucus.
As an MEA recommended candidate, Greene benefitted from mobilization of members from across his district. MEA member-organizers spent the last eight weeks educating and unifying members to vote in Tuesday’s special election, including three events where more than 100 members wrote postcards and made phone calls encouraging absentee ballots or in-person voting. Efforts included more than 3,000 text messages, over 500 phone calls and at least 5,000 postcards to area MEA members.
Thank you to all the MEA members who played a roll in Greene’s overwhelming victory, which overlapped with a much-needed school bond election win in Saginaw Township.
Across the state, more than 60% of school bonds and millages passed on Tuesday, continuing to show that local communities are willing to invest in their local schools, students and educators. More on Tuesday’s school election results.
These wins are just the beginning of the electoral success needed for public education in 2026. To learn about MEA recommended candidates and how you can help — by volunteering, voting and contributing to MEA-PAC — visit MEAVotes.org.
