The Michigan Education Association is pleased to announce the recommendation of Eli Savit for Attorney General.

Throughout his legal career and his recent service as Washtenaw County Prosecutor, Savit has shown he believes in the power of public education to change lives and communities. That’s why MEA’s Statewide Screening & Recommendation Committee recently voted to recommend Savit to MEA members in this important race.

As Michigan’s next Attorney General, Savit will stand up for every student’s right to a quality public education, no matter where they live in our state. Part of making that a reality is ensuring both students and educators are safe from violence in their schools and in their communities, which Savit will make a priority – along with protecting collective bargaining rights for workers and keeping public money in public schools.

As the son of two educators, Savit taught in public schools before becoming a lawyer – and has continued his work in education as a lecturer at the University of Michigan Law School, where he is an AFT Michigan union member.

Prior to his time as prosecuting attorney in Washtenaw, he was senior legal counsel for the City of Detroit, where he led efforts in the landmark right-to-literacy lawsuit on behalf of Detroit schoolchildren. His work with educators, unions, school officials, families, and community leaders culminated in nearly $100 million in funding for Detroit schools.

As the state’s largest school employee union, MEA and its members – who live and work in every Michigan county – have a long history of political engagement and helping friends of public education win elections.

Our Statewide Screening & Recommendation Committee is made up of MEA members from across Michigan, including preK-12 teachers and education support professionals, higher education faculty and staff, and school retirees. Following invitations to candidates from both parties to participate, the committee interviews and chooses candidates to recommend based on stances on education and labor issues.
